The huge Christian cathedral constructed in honor of the apostle Peter on a place of its martyr death in which its relics rest.
It is constructed by the Christian emperor Constantine the Great in 326.

The father Yuli II started building shape of a cathedral which we see today.
He invited for work on the project of the ingenious architect Donat Bramante and in 1506 the project of a cathedral which had to eclipse on greatness, beauty and the sizes all existing pagan and Christian temples was approved.
All great architects and painters of Italy participated in construction of a cathedral for more than 100 years: Bramante, Raphael Santi, Peruzzi, Antonio de Sangallo, Michelangelo, Bernini, Giacomo della of Port, Vinyoll, Carlo Moderna. I designed the square in front of a cathedral and I constructed too Bernini.
The cathedral has 33 side-altars. In the central side-altar under a magnificent ciborium of work of Bernini there is the main throne under which relics of the apostle Peter rest.
Other side-altars are devoted to events of terrestrial life of Lord Jesus. Side-altars in honor of icons of the Mother of God - Skoropomoshnitsa, Ostrobramskaya, Chenstokhovsky.

To the right of an entrance to a cathedral there is a Pieta side-altar - great Michelangelo's creation.
